Do you want to paddle faster........

Most kayakers try to improve their performance solely from paddling more and harder out on the water.

This is logical I guess, as that is where you compete and surely just paddling more will improve your performance.

Gym based strength training can improve on water performance in two ways, indirectly and directly.

Indirect performance improvements come through improved postural control, musculoskeletal alignment and an increased injury resilience through making the athlete more ‘structurally robust' so they can handle higher on water training volumes.

Direct performance improvements come through improved neuromuscular activation, improved fatigue resistance and increasing the size of the muscle fibres resulting in more power production in the boat.

To produce more power in a kayak you need to be able to pull harder on the paddle and do this faster.

No matter how much you paddle even if you use bungees and tennis balls while paddling, the strength gains that can be made are minimal. The use of these training tools should just be the icing on the cake, not your only strength training plan.

To produce more force and pull on your paddle harder your muscles must improve their contractility and for this to occur a very specific training load is needed.

No doubt like most paddlers you have tried a DIY gym training plan or you may have even seen a personal trainer.

It is also likely that similar to most, you did not see any good results or even had your on water performance decrease from your strength training efforts.

Just like your on water training your strength training needs to be specific, well-structured and periodised not just a body building programme off the internet.

There are many misconceptions and fears that kayakers have about strength training.

Many of these stem from the body building industry and gym culture that create images of gigantic, muscular individuals that struggle to move, let alone perform any great feats of athleticism.

Kayakers are not body builders and their training in the gym needs to reflect that.

Performance improvements do not occur by accident.

They require some very specific steps to occur in a certain order.

I want to share with you a kayak specific strength training system that I have developed and personally knows works.
